Sydney Metro NorthWest

Location: North West Sydney, New South Wales
Overview: The $8.3 billion Sydney Metro (Formerly North West Rail Link) is Australia’s largest public transport project currently under construction.
In June 2013, the Thiess John Holland Dragados joint venture was awarded the $1.15 billion Tunnels and Station Civils(TSC) contract for the project, including the construction of 15km twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping and excavation and civil works at five of the eight new train stations and two service facilities.
Description: The Sydney Metro North West will be delivered as part of Sydney’s Rail Future – a customer-focused plan to modernise Sydney’s trains. The project is the biggest public transport project in Sydney since construction of the Harbour Bridge, designed to be capable of operating 12 trains an hour, using single deck, high frequency trains between Cudgegong Rd and Chatswood.
The Tunnelling and Station Civils (TSC) contract was delivered in joint venture with CPB, John Holland and Dragados on behalf of Transport for NSW. Completion of the tunnelling contract works is scheduled for early 2017.
Works include:
• Building 15km twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping – Australia’s longest rail tunnels
• Excavation and civil works for five new stations at Bella Vista, Norwest, Showground, Castle Hill and Cherrybrook
• Excavation and civil works for service facilities at Cheltenham and Epping
• Four double-shield, hard rock gripper TBMs specifically designed for Sydney’s geology will be assembled on site. The first TBM will be in the ground before the end of 2014, with the remainder to follow soon after. Over the life of the project, approximately 2.8 million tonnes of crushed rock will be removed during tunnelling work.
As an integral part of the project delivery team Sustainable Asset Strategies provided sustainable design and construction services which culminated in the achievement of the Australia’s first ever ‘Leading’ rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia for the TSC package. Upon award of the As-built rating the project also became the highest scoring project ever to be independently verified using the IS Tool.
